1. Introduction

Tabble Pty Ltd (“tabble”, “we”, “us”) respects your privacy. This Policy explains what personal information we collect through the tabble app and website, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the rights you have over it. It applies to diners, restaurant owners, and visitors to tabble.com.au.

This Policy is written to comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). It supersedes the previous version (TBL-PRIV-001) and reflects features added since that version, including AI-powered recommendations, group planning and voting, direct messaging, saved lists, and dietary preference filtering.

2. Information we collect

2.1 Information you give us

  • Account details: name, email, phone number, date of birth, profile photo
  • Content you create: reviews, ratings, photos, videos (Tabbs), Stories, comments, captions
  • Saved Lists: names and contents of any wishlist or collection you create, including whether you mark it Private, Shared, or Collaborative
  • Dietary and allergy preferences, if you choose to provide them (see Section 11 — this is sensitive information under the Privacy Act and is never required to use tabble)
  • Messages you send to other users through tabble’s messaging feature
  • Restaurant claim information (for business accounts): ABN, proof of ownership documents, business details

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Device information: device type, operating system, app version, unique device identifiers
  • Location data: if you grant permission, your approximate or precise GPS location, used for map search, “near me” results, and location-based recommendations
  • Usage data: screens viewed, features used, search queries, time spent, crash reports
  • Log data: IP address, access times, referring app or website

2.3 Information from third parties

  • If you sign up using Google or Apple Sign-In, we receive your name and email from that provider
  • Publicly available restaurant data (name, address, opening hours) sourced to build initial map listings before a restaurant is claimed
  • Live rating and review-count snapshots from the Google Places API, displayed temporarily and never stored beyond a 24-hour cache

3. How we use your information

  • To operate and provide the tabble app: your feed, map, reviews, messaging, and account features
  • To personalise recommendations (see Section 5, AI Processing)
  • To enable group planning and voting between you and people you invite (see Section 8)
  • To communicate with you: service updates, security alerts, and (if you opt in) marketing
  • To maintain safety and integrity: detecting fake reviews, spam, and Community Guidelines violations
  • To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service

4. How we share your information

RecipientWhat’s sharedWhy
Other tabble usersYour public profile, reviews, posts, Tabbs, Stories, and public ListsThis is a social platform — public content is visible to other users by design
Restaurant ownersReviews and ratings left on their listing (not your private profile data)So businesses can respond to feedback
Group plan participantsYour votes and identity within that specific group session onlyGroup voting requires participants to see who voted for what
Service providersData necessary for them to provide their service (hosting, cloud storage, push notifications, analytics)We use these providers to run tabble; they are contractually bound to protect your data and use it only for the purpose we specify
Law enforcement / regulatorsOnly where required by Australian law or a valid legal requestLegal compliance

Tabble never sells your personal information to third parties, and never shares your dietary/allergy preferences, private messages, or private Lists with anyone outside the specific context they were created for (e.g. a private List stays private; a message stays between you and the recipient).

5. AI-powered recommendations

New since the original Policy

tabble’s AI Restaurant Finder and group planning features use an internally-built scoring algorithm to recommend restaurants based on the preferences you provide in that session (occasion, cuisine, budget, group size, location, and dietary preferences if set).

  • This scoring happens on tabble’s own servers. We do not send your preference data to third-party AI providers (such as OpenAI or similar services) to generate these recommendations
  • Preference answers you provide during an AI Finder or Plan with Friends session are stored to generate that session’s results and to let you view your past searches; they are not used to build an advertising profile or shared with restaurants directly
  • If this changes in the future (for example, if tabble adopts a third-party AI model), we will update this Policy and notify users before the change takes effect

6. Location data

tabble requests location access to power map search, “near me” results, and location-based recommendations. You can control this at any time in your device settings.

  • Precise location (GPS) is used only while the app is in use, unless you separately grant background permission
  • We do not track or store a continuous history of your movements — location is used at the moment of a search or map view, not logged as an ongoing trail
  • You can always search by typing a suburb manually instead of sharing your location

7. Notifications

tabble sends push notifications for activity relevant to you: new followers, likes, comments, badge achievements, review responses, and group plan updates (such as being invited to vote, or a poll closing). You can manage notification types in Settings, and disable push notifications entirely at the device level at any time.

8. Group plans & voting

New since the original Policy

When you create or join a group plan (“Plan with Friends”), the following applies:

  • The plan creator’s chosen preferences (occasion, cuisine, budget, location, date/time) are visible to everyone invited to that session
  • Your individual vote (like/dislike on each restaurant option) is visible to other participants in that same session, alongside your name and profile photo, so the group can see who voted for what
  • Only the plan creator can save the completed plan to their Lists; participants who voted do not automatically get a saved copy
  • Only the plan creator can invite additional people to a session — participants cannot add other people to a poll they didn’t create
  • Group session data (the plan’s preferences, votes, and results) is retained so the creator can view their plan history, and is deleted if the creator deletes the plan

9. Messaging

New since the original Policy

  • Messages you send are stored to deliver them and to display your conversation history
  • Messages are only visible to the sender and recipient(s) of that conversation — tabble staff do not read message content except where necessary to investigate a report of abuse, harassment, or a Community Guidelines violation, or where required by law
  • Read receipts (if enabled) share with the other person when you’ve seen their message; you can disable this in Settings
  • Deleting a message removes it from your view; the other participant may still retain a copy of the conversation on their device or account

10. Saved Lists

Lists you create (wishlists/collections of restaurants) can be set to Private, Shared, or Collaborative:

VisibilityWho can see it
PrivateOnly you
SharedAnyone you explicitly share the link with, view-only
CollaborativeAnyone you invite as a collaborator, who can also add/remove places

AI Finder searches and completed group plans can also be saved into a dedicated section of your Lists (“My Saved Plans & AI Searches”), preserving the date, preferences used, and results. Only you (or, for a group plan, only the creator) can save that plan — it is treated as your private record unless you separately choose to share it.

11. Dietary & allergy information — sensitive information

This section covers sensitive information under the Privacy Act 1988. Health-adjacent data like allergy and dietary information receives stronger legal protection than ordinary account data, and we handle it accordingly.

  • Providing dietary or allergy preferences is entirely optional. You can use every core feature of tabble without ever setting this information
  • If you do provide it, we use it only to filter search results and AI recommendations to match your stated preferences
  • We do not share your dietary/allergy preferences with restaurants, other users, or any third party. A restaurant sees only the dietary tags it has published about its own menu (e.g. “vegan options available”) — it does not see your personal preferences or allergy notes
  • Dietary tags shown for a restaurant are self-reported by that restaurant. tabble does not independently verify allergen safety, and this information must never be treated as a substitute for confirming directly with restaurant staff before ordering
  • You can delete your dietary/allergy preferences at any time in Settings, which removes them from our systems

12. Data retention

Data typeRetention period
Account & profile dataUntil you delete your account, plus a reasonable period for backups and fraud prevention
Reviews, posts, Tabbs, StoriesStories: 24 hours, then automatically deleted. Reviews/posts: retained until you delete them or your account
MessagesUntil deleted by you (subject to the other participant’s own copy, per Section 9)
Location dataNot retained as a history; used transiently for each search
Group plan & voting dataUntil the creator deletes the plan
Dietary/allergy preferencesUntil you remove them or delete your account
Google Places rating snapshots24-hour cache only, never permanently stored

13. Your rights

Under the Privacy Act, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Opt out of marketing communications at any time
  • Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) if you believe we’ve mishandled your information

To exercise any of these rights, contact hello@tabble.com.au. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe, consistent with our obligations under the Privacy Act.

14. Data security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections, access controls, and secure cloud infrastructure. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data proportionate to its sensitivity — with extra care for the sensitive information described in Section 11.

15. Children

tabble is not intended for use by anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we become aware that a user is under 16, we will take steps to close that account.

16. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy as tabble evolves. Material changes will be notified via in-app notification or email before they take effect. Continued use of tabble after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
